India Releases Final CRI Guidelines Version 2.0 (2025).


The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has officially published the NEW GUIDELINES FOR EXAMINATION OF COMPUTER RELATED INVENTIONS (CRIs) - 2025, today, July 29, 2025.

This much-awaited update marks a significant milestone in India’s evolving IP landscape, bringing greater clarity, consistency, and predictability to the examination of software and computer-related inventions - especially in light of growing innovation in AI, blockchain, fintech, and digital health.


The revised guidelines are far more comprehensive than the 2018 version, and include:

  • Annexure I: Illustrative examples to better interpret the guidelines in real-world scenarios.

  • Annexure II: Key judicial precedents on CRI patentability.
